As I was driving to Little Silver this morning, I noticed the changes that fall brings to the scenery that goes unnoticed when I am too busy or deep in thought about the tasks I have scheduled on my calendar. So unfortunate really, because I was missing the richness of the change. The autumn leaves are beautiful hues of red, yellow and orange. These colors, along with the brisk coolness in the air are signs and evidence of a change in season. Similar to the transformation of the scenery along my drive, are the changes in the classrooms that I visit at this time of the year.
'The First Six Weeks of School' (great book by Denton and Kriete) will be over at the end of next week. Reflecting on the transformation that has already taken place in the environments of our youngest to oldest students is somewhat remarkable. The spaces and places have come alive much like the colors of the trees along the road. Students are engaged and building stamina for time dedicated to meaningful work.
This year we embark on ensuring that teachers and students are prepared for the Partnership of College and Career Readiness, most often referred to as PARCC. After 'The First Six Weeks of School', classrooms environments are established to support rigorous learning. Throughout the days and weeks ahead we are dedicated to delving deeply into the teaching the Common Core standards that grounds our instruction for student learning outcomes. Let’s enjoy the transformation that our learning will bring. Notice the color and richness that occurs in our classroom environments and the impact it has on the children that enter.
